Stanford, Ca - Denise Infante scored on an unassisted goal with 13:31 in the first overtime to give the sixth-ranked American University field hockey team a 4-3 victory over Stanford University in a non-league game Tuesday afternoon at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
For Infante, it was her second goal of the game. Infante had given the Eagles a 3-1 lead with 25:22 remaining in the game, thanks to an assist from Irene Schickhardt.
Stanford refused to give in despite the two goal deficit to its nationally-ranked opponent. Aska Sturdevan scored at 18:20 to cut the Eagle margin to one goal, and then Julia Drewes scored at 15:08 to tie the game. Neither team scored the rest of the way and thus the game went into overtime. Bailey Richardson earned an assist on Drewes' goal.
American opened with a quick goal at 30:56 of the first half on a goal by Irene Schickhardt. The Cardinal countered to tie the game at 9:45 on a goal by Jess Zutz with an assist to Caroline Hussey.
Schickhardt put the Eagles in front, 2-1, on a goal with six seconds remaining in the first half.
The victory was American's first of the year compared to two losses. Stanford fell to 1-2.
The Cardinal returns to action on Friday at 1 p.m. to host second-ranked Wake Forest.
