Stockton, Ca - The Stanford field hockey team opened NorPac Conference play with an impressive 2-1 victory at Pacific on Thursday afternoon at Brookside Field.
Freshman Rachel Mozenter proved to be the offensive star of the game for the Cardinal with two goals, including the game winner at 46:41. On the winning goal, Mozenter had only moments earlier fired a shot at Tiger goalkeeper Valerie Niles who pushed aside the shot only to be rebounded back into the net by Mozenter, who scored her fourth goal of the year.
Mozenter scored Stanford's first goal of the game at 4:14 only after Bailey Richardson's shot was blocked by the UOP goalkeeper.
Stanford goalkeeper Madison Bell collected eight saves. In all, Stanford fired 12 shots compared to ten for Pacific.
Stanford's defense shutout down the offensive production of Pacific's Vianney Campos, who leads the nation in points (32 points, 15 goals, 2 assists).
The victory pushed Stanford's season record to 4-6 and 1-0 in the NorPac. Pacific fell to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Stanford returns home on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to face No. 13 California. The Golden Bears are 6-2 this season. Cal features one of the top goal scorers in the nation, Valentina Godfrid, who is tied for fifth nationally in goals per game (1.25) and eighth in points per game (3.0). Earlier this year, Cal battled back from a 3-0 first half deficit to defeat the Cardinal, 4-3, in Berkeley.
