Stanford, Ca - In a closely fought game on a warm Sunday afternoon at the Stanford Varsity Field Hockey Turf, the rivalry between Stanford and California was renewed, and again it was another one-goal victory for the Golden Bears.
Valentina Godfrid tallied her second goal of the season at 53:50 and that proved to be the game winner as Cal scored a 3-2 decision over Stanford in a NorPac game.
Cal, ranked 13th in the nation, jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals at 19:18 by Godfrid and at 22:17 by Andrea Lo. The game in the first half was closer than the score indicated with Stanford only trailing Cal in shots, 5-3, and each goalkeeper tallying two saves apiece.
At 49:19, the game really got interesting. Cal goalkeeper Veronica Sykes blocked a shot by Stanford's Hillary Braun, but Julia Drewes rebounded the ball into the Cal net to make it 2-1. The game was changing momentum in Stanford's favor, but only four minutes, 31 seconds later, Godfrid (Cal's leading scorer) put the ball into the Stanford net to give the Golden Bears a 3-1 lead.
The two-goal deficit didn't deter the Cardinal as they fought back to pull within one goal when Drewes scored at 63:57. For Drewes, it was her team-leading eighth goal of the year.
Stanford had one last chance to tie the game on a penalty corner with no time remaining, but could not convert the situation into a goal.
The loss broke Stanford's two-game winning streak and dropped the Cardinal to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the Norpac. Cal is 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
