Stanford, Ca - The Stanford field hockey team enjoyed its biggest offensive output of the 2006 season with a convincing 5-1 victory over Columbia University in a non-league game on Sunday morning at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
The Cardinal dominated from start to finish in upping its season record to 2-3. Stanford peppered the Columbia goalie with 31 shots while the Cardinal defense held the Lions to only six shots in 70 minutes of play.
Stanford featured a balanced attack lead by Julia Drewes who tallied two goals. Her first goal proved to be the game winner at 28:12 of the first half to give Stanford a 2-1 lead. Aska Sturdevan was credited with an assist. Then at 25:06 of the second half, Drewes hit the back of the Columbia net with her third goal of the season. Drewes is now tied in goals scored with Sturdevan and Jess Zutz. Drewes is the total team leader (points, assists) with nine.
Liz Robinson, Zutz and Hillary Braun scored the other goals for the Cardinal, whose next game is next Saturday at California (7:00 p.m.). Bailey Richardson recorded two assists in the Stanford win.
