Stanford, Ca - Another tough one-goal loss for the Stanford field hockey team.
This time on Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf, Pacific's Vianney Campos, the nation's fourth-leading scorer, tallied the game winner with less than eleven minutes to play to give Pacific a come-from-behind 3-2 decision. It was Stanford's fifth one-goal loss this year.
It was the second meeting between the two schools this year with the Cardinal scoring a 2-1 decision in Stockton nine days ago.
Pacific scored early (1:29) in the first half when Marissa Atilano fired a shot past Stanford goalkeeper Madison Bell to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Stanford, shortly thereafter, called a timeout to regroup, and then six minutes later, tied the game on an unassisted goal by Julia Drewes, her team-leading eighth goal of the year.
Both teams battled on even terms the rest of the first half with the score tied at 1-1 at intermission.
Stanford took the lead at 48:24 on a penalty corner goal by Aska Sturdevan, her fourth of the season. But exactly two minutes later, Pacific's Melody Demel tied the game on a penalty corner, and then 14 minutes later, Campos added her 16th goal of the season for the game winner.
Stanford's Nora Soza had two defensive saves.
The loss dropped Stanford to 4-8 overall, while Pacific advanced to 6-5.
Stanford returns to action on October 7 when the Cardinal hosts Davidson at 3:00 p.m.
