Stanford, Ca - Jess Zutz scored a career-high three goals to lead the Stanford field hockey team to an impressive 5-1 victory over Appalachian State in a NorPac game on Thursday afternoon at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
Stanford scored early when Zutz powered a shot past ASU goalkeeper Mikayla Paulson at 1:41. Appalachian State tied the game seven minutes later on a goal by Alicia Larkins. But from then on, it was all Stanford as Zutz scored what proved to be the winning goal at 19:41 followed by first half goals by Rachel Mozenter and Zutz again to give Stanford a commanding 4-1 lead at halftime.
Katherine Brooks added Stanford's fifth goal of the game at 68:22. For Brooks, it was her first goal of the season for the senior who was playing in her final home regular season game.
For Zutz, the three goals gives her a team-leading nine for the season and has pushed her into the team lead in total points (21 points, 9 goals, 3 assists), one point ahead of Julia Drewes (20 points, 8 goals, 4 assists).
Stanford outshot Appalachian State, 22-6.
Stanford increased its overall record to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the NorPac. Appalachian State fell to 1-12 overall and 0-4 in league play.
On Saturday (October 14) at 1:00 p.m., the varsity will play the Alumni.
