No 1 Stanford Women Take Top Spot in Home Opener

Oct. 3, 2006

(Redwood City, CA) Stanford hosted its first event of the year September 30-October 1, and the #1-Ranked Stanford Women's team showed up in full force to win by 11 pts over U Hawaii. The Bryson Women's Regatta was plagued by light air all weekend, but sailing two fleets simultaneously allowed all but one race to be completed. The Cardinals showed off their depth rotating in seven different sailors throughout the weekend. Saturday's starters Caroline Young, Leigh Hammel, Joanna Madsen in A-Division along with Taylor Grimes and Katherine Schlosser in B-division coupled a lot of firsts with a few bad scores to give the team a 5-pt lead going into Sunday. Juniors Evan Brown and Carrie Denning sailed consistently on Sunday while freshman Leigh Hammel tried her hand at skippering B-division. Going into the last race Stanford was 3 pts up on Hawaii, and decided to put the hammer down, subbing Grimes and Schlosser back into B to finish up the event with firsts in both divisions.
