Davidson, NC - The tenth-ranked California field hockey team jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half and Stanford was never able to recover as the Golden Bears scored a 3-1 victory over the Cardinal on Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the NorPac Tournament at Davidson College.
Goals by Valentina Godrid at 21:22 and Ashley Glosz at 24:51 gave Cal a 2-0 lead. Stanford cut the lead in half at 2-1 at 29:16 on an unassisted goal by Jamie Hais. Hais ripped a shot from the top of the circle that found its way over a diving Cal goalkeeper Veronica Sykes. The Cardinal came within inches of tying it just before the break, but Caroline Hussey's shot hit the crossbar.
At 61:59, Godfrid struck again for Cal and ended the Stanford season at 9-10.
Madison Bell's string of three straight shutouts came to an end. Bell did have four saves as the junior goalkeeper played every minute (1334:51) of every game.
Jess Zutz finished the season as the team's leading scorer (34 points, 13 goals, 8 assists).
Hais, Zutz and Bailey Richardson were named to the all-tournament team.
