No. 3 Stanford Defeats No. 7 Michigan, 12-4 In Opening Match Of Stanford Invite

Feb. 11, 2006

Stanford, Calif - Senior Nancy El-Sakkary (Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec) and junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) scored 3 goals apiece to pace the third-ranked Stanford women's water polo team to a 12-4 victory over seventh-ranked Michigan in the opening match of the 2006 Stanford Invitational on Saturday morning at the Avery Aquatic Center.

The Wolverines (6-1) looked to take Stanford by surprise and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal at 6:25 in the 1st period. The advantage would not last long, though, as Stanford (2-0) responded with an offensive attack that saw the Cardinal score the next 9 goals of the game. Stanford extended their lead to as much as 9 goals as it ended Michigan's season-opening winning streak at 6 games.

Seven different Cardinal players tallied scores in the match, led by 3 each from Hansen and El-Sakkary, and 2 from freshman Lauren Silver (Long Beach, CA). Sophomore Jacquelyn Gauthier (Irvine, CA) scored a goal to bring her season total to 5, tied for best on the team with Silver. Alison Gregorka (Ann Arbor, MI), Megan Nesland (Long Beach, CA), and Christina Hewko (Newport Beach, CA) also added scores for the Cardinal. Junior goalkeeper Meridith McColl (Mission Viejo, CA) played an outstanding defensive game and notched 8 saves. 7 of those saves came in the last two periods, as McColl and the rest of the Cardinal defense repeatedly thwarted Wolverine comeback attempts.

Up next for the Cardinal is a showdown with #2-ranked USC at 5 PM later on Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center.
