Stanford, Calif - In a classic match-up between cross-town rivals, third-ranked Stanford prevailed, 6-4, over sixth-ranked Cal in a tight and aggressive contest Sunday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. With the victory, the Cardinal (4-1) clinched third place in the 2006 Stanford Invitational after defeating No. 7 Michigan, No. 11 San Jose State, and Cal, in addition to losing to No. 2 USC. The Golden Bears (3-3) finished fourth with a victory over No. 16 Arizona State and losses to No.1 UCLA, No. 4 Hawaii, and Stanford.
The Cardinal jumped out to an early lead with a goal by junior Alison Gregorka (Ann Arbor, MI) at 6:28 in the 1st period, but Berkeley answered back with a goal by Holly Farlin three minutes later. The Cardinal, however, would take the lead for good at 2:08 in the 1st period when junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) hit a penalty shot from 4 meters to put the Cardinal up, 2-1. Stanford led by a score of 5-3 at halftime and displayed tenacious defense in the second half to seal the victory, 6-4.
Gregorka and freshman Lauren Silver (Long Beach, CA) led the way for Stanford with 2 goals each, while sophomore Jacquelyn Gauthier (Irvine, CA) and Hansen each added a goal. Cal got single scores from Farlin, junior Elsie Windes, freshman Melissa Wheeler, and sophomore Vanessa Lindsey. The goalies for both squads had solid games, with Stanford's Meridith McColl recording 7 saves and Cal's Heather Stuart recording 9.
A bipartisan crowd kept the atmosphere of the game intense, as students and alumni for both teams led cheers throughout the match.
In other competition, No. 2 USC defeated No. 1 UCLA, 10-8, in the title match of the tournament, while No. 4 Hawaii beat No. 11 SJSU, 12-5, for 5th place and No. 16 ASU beat No. 7 Michigan, 13-7, for 7th place.
