No. 3 Stanford Beats No. 6 Cal, 8-3 in Gaucho Invitational

Santa Barbara, Calif. - In this season's second matchup between the two schools, the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal downed the No. 6 Cal Bears 8-3 in Saturday afternoon action at the Gaucho Invitational on the UC Santa Barbara campus. Senior Laurel Champion (Palo Alto, CA) and junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) paced the Cardinal with 2 goals each. On the year, Stanford is now 8-1 overall, 3-0 in MPSF play, and 2-0 against Cal. Cal now drops to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the MPSF.

The Cardinal jumped off to an early 3-0 lead and maintained a cushioned lead throughout the match. Cal did not net more than 1 score in any period and never managed to come within 2 goals after the first period.

Champion and Hansen led Stanford scorers, while seniors Nancy El-Sakkary (Dollar des Ormeaux, Quebec) and Scotti Shafer (Carlsbad, CA) and freshmen Lauren Silver (Long Beach, CA) and Jessica Steffens (Danville, CA) each added a goal. Cal senior Brittani Llorente led the Bears with 2 goals, with junior Elsie Windes scoring the final goal.

With the win, Stanford squads are now 26-8 (.765) against Cal under head coach John Tanner (1998-present).

The Cardinal will next take on No. 2 UCLA at 11:30 AM on Sunday for a spot in the Gaucho Invitational Title game.
