No. 3 Stanford Defeats No. 15 UCSD, 11-4 At Gaucho Invitational

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated the 15th-ranked UCSD Tritons 11-4 in Saturday morning action at the Gaucho Invitational on the campus of UC Santa Barbara. Senior Scotti Shafer of Carlsbad, CA tied a career-high with 3 goals to lead the way for Stanford. With the win, Stanford improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in MPSF play. The loss dropped UCSD to 7-5 overall.

To start off, the Tritons kept the match close, pacing with the Cardinal to a 2-2 tie at the end of the first period. Stanford then stepped up to score the next 5 goals - 2 in the second and 3 in the third - while holding UCSD scoreless to maintain a 7-2 lead at the start of the fourth frame.

The final period saw 6 scores - the most in the game - with Stanford tacking on another 4 goals to total 11 and UCSD doubling their score at 4.

Shafer's 3 scores led a balanced offensive attack for the Cardinal in which 6 different players netted goals. Sophomore Jacquelyn Gauthier (Irvine, CA), junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA), and sophomore Megan May (San Diego, CA) each contributed with 2 goals in the game. Freshman Koree Blyleven (San Diego, CA) and junior Christina Hewko (Newport Beach, CA) also chipped in with a goal apiece.

The Tritons were led by 2 scores from junior Sarah Bajorek, while freshman Sydney Gstettenbauer and junior Michelle Perkins each added a goal.

Stanford will next play at 4:00 PM on Saturday against the winner of the earlier match between No. 6 Cal and host No. 11 UCSB.
