No. 3 Stanford Upsets No. 2 UCLA, 4-2 In Gaucho Invitational

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford Cardinal upset the second-ranked UCLA Bruins 4-2 on Sunday morning at the Gaucho Invitational on the campus of UC Santa Barbara. Freshman Lauren Silver of Long Beach, CA scored a team-high two goals to key the win, which placed Stanford in the tournament's title match against No. 1 USC later on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in MPSF action. The loss dropped UCLA to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play.

The match was tied at 1-1 after one period before Stanford scored a crucial two goals in the second frame to build a 3-1 lead. UCLA would answer back with a goal in the third to come within 3-2, but the Cardinal put the game away with a goal in the final frame.

Silver's two scores brought her team-leading goals total to 20 on the season, while junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) scored a goal to bring her second-place total to 16. Junior Christina Hewko (Newport Beach, CA) also scored a goal for the Cardinal.

UCLA got single scores from sophomores Gabrielle Domanic and Courtney Mathewson.

Stanford is now 21-12 (.636) against UCLA under head coach John Tanner (1998-present). The Cardinal will next face No. 1 USC (11-0, 2-0) in the Gaucho Invitational title match at 4:10 PM later Sunday afternoon.
