Sept. 13, 2006

Box Score

Iowa City, Ia - It was a rough homecoming for Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine as she saw her Cardinal field hockey team drop a 2-1 decision to the University of Iowa in a non-league game Wednesday night at Grant Field.

Irvine was a member of the 1999 Iowa team that reached the NCAA Final Four. Irvine led the team in points with 47 (17 goals, 13 assists), and was named to the all Final Four and Big Ten Tournament teams as well as being a second team regional All-American selection.

In the first of a three-game road trip for the Cardinal, Stanford (down 2-0 at halftime) came out of halftime with a newfound energy. Stanford was able to hold the Hawkeyes to zero second half goals. During the 57th minute, Stanford was awarded a penalty corner. Through a flurry of shots, midfielder Julia Drewes scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season past Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley. However, Iowa's defense toughened the rest of the game as Stanford fell to 2-5 on the year. Iowa upped its season record to 3-4.

Iowa outshot Stanford, 12-8. Four of Stanford's eight shots came during the 57th minute penalty corner. The Hawkeyes also out cornered Stanford, 6-4.

Iowa scored its first goal 55 seconds into the first period, and added a second goal four minutes later.

Stanford travels to Northwestern for a non-league game on Friday, and then plays Yale in Evanston, Illinois, on Sunday.
