STANFORD, Calif.- With frigid temperatures wreaking havoc on the tournament schedule, only one set of singles matches was played Sunday afternoon to close out the Freeman Invitational in Las Vegas.
Four of Stanford's five participants registered wins in their singles matches on Sunday. No. 8 Jessica Nguyen edged UCLA'a Ana Victoria Lind 6-4, 6-4, No. 39 Lindsay Burdette cruised past No. 99 Kady Pooler of Arizona State 6-2, 6-4, No. 89 Theresa Logar routed Georgia Tech's Tarryn Rudman 6-2, 6-3 and Anne Yelsey returned to action with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Oregon's Carmen Seremata .
No. 13 Celia Durkin was upset by Arizona State's Nadia Abdala 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Stanford did not compete on Saturday, but two doubles teams picked up wins on a weather-shortened Friday afternoon. Burdette and Nguyen defeated Florida's Megan Alexander and Anastasia Revzina 8-3, while Durkin and Yelsey routed Oregon's Monica Hoz de Villa and Anna Powaska 8-3.
Meanwhile, Stanford also was represented at the National Tennis Collegiate Classic as Whitney Deason, Megan Doheny and Lejla Hodzic were all in action.
Deason enjoyed the most success, defeating No. 66 Lauren Lui of Northwestern 6-4, 6-3 and No. 61 Tracy Lin 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the opening two rounds. She then fell to USC's Lindsey Nelson 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round.
Hodzic and Doheny dropped tough three-set matches in the opening round. Hodzic was bested 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 by Northwestern's Sam Murray and Doheny fell 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to Texas' Marija Milic.
In the consolation bracket, Hodzic was defeated by No. 70 Sarah Lancaster of Texas 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 and Doheny dropped a 6-3, 6-1 to No. 91 Zuzana Cerna of Baylor.
The team of Deason and Hodzic was edged by Northwestern's Nazlie Ghazel and Keri Robinson 9-7 in the doubles round of 16. In the consolation, they were defeated by Georgia Tech's Amanda Craddock and Kirsten Flower 9-8 (2).
Stanford returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 25, when it hosts UC Davis in the season opener at 1:30 p.m. The homestand concludes the following day with a dual against No. 21 Fresno State at 1:30 p.m.
