Seattle, Wash. - The Stanford track and field team began competition at the University of Washington Invitational at Dempsey Indoor Track in Seattle, Wash. today. The two-day event kicked off with the 5,000-meter run, distance medley relay and multi-events and will continue all day tomorrow.
The Cardinal men's `A' distance medley relay squad highlighted the day, posting an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 9:33.16 to finish first in the field. The team included returning All-Americans Russell Brown and Michael Garcia, along with freshmen Zach Chandy and Justin Marpole-Bird.
Junior Josh Hustedt recorded indoor personal best marks in all four events on the first day of the heptathlon and currently stands second overall with 3,092 points. He finished second in the 60 meter dash with a 7.15 mark and second in the long jump with a 24-1 ½ (7.35M) mark. In the shot put, he posted a 36-4 ¼ (11.08m) before recording a 6-7 (2.01m) high jump.
On the women's side, sophomore Lauren Stewart recorded a pair of first place finishes in the 60 meter hurdles and the long jump. She posted a time of 8.85 in the hurdles and a 17-11 (5.46m) mark in the long jump. Stewart also posted a new indoor personal best of 5-6 ½ (1.65m) in the high jump. The Brentwood, Tenn. native finished fourth overall in the pentathlon with 3,780 points.
Tomorrow's action begins with field events at 8:30 a.m. and track events at 9:30 a.m., and is scheduled to conclude at 4:15 p.m.
