No. 3 Stanford fell to No. 1 USC 8 - 6 in their second match of the tournament. The Cardinal fall to 1-1 in the tournament, while USC moves to 2-0. Katie Hansen scored four of the six Stanford goals in the game to lead all scorers. Alison Gregorka and Lauren Silver also scored one goal apiece for the Cardinal. Silver has tallied at least one goal in all three of Stanford's games this season.
Both teams began the game playing tough defense, but USC managed to sneak one in the net with 2:12 left on the clock. The remainder of the quarter went scoreless with USC holding a slim 1-0 lead.
USC got on the board first again in the second quarter, but Stanford came roaring back, getting two goals from Hansen and another from Gregorka to take a one goal advantage into the half.
The Trojans quickly scored a goal to tie the game in the third quarter. However, Stanford swiftly answered back with a goal from Silver to take the lead once again. With only 20 seconds lapsed after Stanford's goal, USC punched one in to even up the game. As expected, this game was extremely close going into the final quarter, with the score being 4 - 4.
In the final period, the two teams traded goals, with Hansen taking advantage of a USC ejection. The tie score remained intact midway through the fourth quarter, until USC scored back-to-back goals aided by an ejection against Gregorka. Hansen answered back with a goal for the Cardinal to bring them within one. Stanford would never get closer than that as USC scored another goal late in the quarter to win by a score of 8 - 6.
Both teams return to action tomorrow for the second day of the tournament. Stanford will take on ASU at 8:00am in Avery Pool, while USC faces off against San Jose State at 8:00am in Baker Pool.
