Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - No. 2 Duke topped No. 18 Stanford women's lacrosse 14-8 on Sunday afternoon, the Cardinal's second loss of the season. The Blue Devils used early goals in both halves to put away Stanford, which drops to 1-2 overall.

Duke attacker Carolina Cryer kicked off the scoring just 22 seconds into the game, and the Blue Devils would build a three-goal lead over the first three minutes. Senior midfielder Liz Piselli got the Cardinal onto the board on an assist from freshman midfielder Lauren Schmidt closing the Duke lead to 3-1 with 17:08 remaining before halftime.

Cryer added her second score to regain a three-goal lead before Stanford put in back-to-back goals from Piselli and Schmidt. Duke matched the Cardinal scores, taking a 6-3 lead with less than three minutes left in the first half. Stanford answered with two goals in the final two minutes to build momentum and cut the Duke lead to one heading into halftime.

The Cardinal came out of the locker room firing, tying the score at six on junior attacker Daphne Patterson's second goal of the day just two minutes into the second half. From there however, Duke went on a 4-0 run and scored eight of the final 10 goals of the game. Goals from Patterson and Schmidt in the final 20 minutes were not enough to overcome the Blue Devils.

Cryer led Duke, tallying five goals on Sunday, while attacker Kristen Waagbo set a new program record for career assists, tallying three on the day. Goalkeeper Kim Imbesi recorded eight saves to earn the win.

Patterson led the team with three goals and was among three Stanford players to score multiple goals on Sunday. Schmidt and Piselli scored two goals apiece, while junior midfielder Megan McClain added one goal for the Cardinal. McClain also led Stanford with two assists for three points on Sunday. Junior goalkeeper Laura Shane made 19 saves in the loss.
