The Stanford Invitational got underway this morning with the Cardinal defeating San Jose State 15 - 8. Senior Alison Gregorka the led the way for Stanford, scoring four goals in the match. Junior Jacquelyn Gauthier, sophomore Lauren Silver and freshman Alex Koran each provided two goals. Also scoring a goal for Stanford was senior Christina Hewko, sophomore Kira Hillman, and freshman Kelly Eaton.
The first quarter began with Stanford scoring two quick goals. San Jose State countered with a goal of their own, to pull within one. The two teams then traded goals, bringing the quarter to a close with Stanford holding a 3 - 2 advantage.
The Cardinal offense proved too much for San Jose State to handle in the second quarter, as Stanford scored five goals in a row. Stanford also played tenacious defense in the quarter, managing to hold the Spartans scoreless, as they took an 8 - 2 lead into the half.
Both teams came out fast in the third quarter, scoring goals with less than two minutes expired. Stanford scored once again to take a commanding seven-goal lead. San Jose State threw one in with only 33 seconds left on the clock, but the Cardinal countered quickly and found a way to score with only nine seconds left on the clock, making the score 11 - 4.
In the final quarter, San Jose State scored four goals, doubling their previous total. Stanford, however, was able to answer with four goals of their own, securing the Cardinal victory.
