Stanford continued its winning ways Friday, and won its 11th straight match in a row. The Cardinal hasn't dropped a match since February 3rd vs. USC. That match still stands as the only loss of the season for No. 1 ranked Stanford. Stanford tonight was led by three players with three or more goals, and was once again powered by Katie Hansen, who scored four more times. Christina Hewko and Jessica Steffens were the other two players to chip in three goals.
Stanford came out strong in the first quarter with Katie Hansen's first goal 25 seconds into the match. Lauren Silver soon followed with a goal forty seconds later and the Cardinal had a quick 2-0 lead over the Aztecs. Stacy Werner followed with a goal for the Aztecs, but Christina Hewko followed with two goals within 35 seconds of each other and Stanford carried a 4-2 lead. After a late goal by Kelly Eaton with 14 seconds left in the period, Stanford held a 5-2 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter was very evenly played as the Aztecs and Stanford each scored three goals apiece. Jessica Steffens and Christina Hewko scored early goals for Stanford but San Diego State quickly responded with two goals of its own. After Katie Hansen's third goal of the match, the Cardinal held a slim 8-5 lead at halftime.
The usual suspects continued to shine in third quarter as Jessica Steffens, Christina Hewko each scored their second goals of the contest. San Diego State responded with goals from Jenna Schuster and Anna Gonzales but Stanford still held a small 10-7 lead going into the final period.
The Cardinal pulled away in the fourth period behind Katie Hansen's fourth goal. Jacquelyn Gauthier and Jessica Steffens also had goals in the period. Kira Hillman also added a late period goal for Stanford. It was almost a scoreless period for the Aztecs, but Anna Gonzales added a late goal, to give the match a final score of 14-8. Kate Heddleston once again relieved Meridith McColl in the quarter and recorded one save.
Katie Hansen now has 10 goals on the weekend in two games with still one more to play against UC San Diego tomorrow. This was the opening of the new San Diego State AquaPlex on the San Diego State campus.
Stanford returns to action tomorrow when they face the UC San Diego Tritons at 12:00 PM in San Diego, CA.
