Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's lacrosse team ended its four game losing skid on Sunday afternoon with a 10-9 win over Colgate at Maloney Field. After Colgate came back from a 6-3 halftime deficit to take a lead, the Cardinal responded with freshman attack Amanda Schwab's game winner with 5:31 left.
Stanford started the game off on fire, scoring four times in the first 13 minutes. Junior midfielder Liz Piselli notched the first goal of the afternoon on a free position just five minutes into the game. Sophomores Bess Seigfried, Jamie Nesbitt and Bis Fries followed Piselli with scores.
The Raiders responded with two goals to cut the Stanford lead to 4-2 with 13:47 remaining in the half. The Cardinal answered right back, getting goals from Piselli and junior midfielder Megan McClain to give Stanford a 6-2 lead with five minutes left in the half. Colgate's Molly Ortolano pulled the Raiders back within in three to end the first half.
Down by three, Colgate came out of the locker rooms scoring, posting five unanswered goals to start the second half. Junior midfielder Jess Van der Meulen started off and finished the 5-0 run, scoring both of her two goals on the day. The run gave the Raiders their first lead of the game on a goal from Ortolano at the 19:25 mark. Van der Meulen pushed the lead to two goals with 18:55 remaining.
The Cardinal got out of a 17 minute scoring drought and cut the lead back to one on Piselli's third goal of the day with 17:38 left in the game. Stanford followed with goals from freshman attack Dana Lindsay and McClain to take a 9-8 lead, but the Raiders responded to tie things up at nine with 8:28 remaining. Three minutes later Schwab put away the game winner, while the Cardinal defense held off the Colgate offense over the final five minutes for the win.
Piselli and McClain were the Cardinal's only multiple-goal scorers, posting three and two scores, respectively. Fries, Seigfried, Nesbitt, Lindsay and Schwab each added a goal as well. Fries, McClain and junior attack Daphne Patterson all assisted on one goal apiece. Junior attack Lindsay Pittard led the Raiders with three goals on the day. Stanford junior goalkeeper Laura Shane made 17 saves in the win.
After a week off, the Cardinal take off for a season-long three game road swing, traveling to Virginia Tech on March 25 before moving on to face Maryland on March 28 and Vanderbilt to close out the month on March 31.
