Stanford once again developed a big lead early, and never looked back in beating regional rival Santa Clara 18-2 at the Avery Aquatics Center on Sunday morning. The Cardinal raced out to a 12-1 halftime lead and eventually won by the score of 18-2. It was Stanford's second highest scoring game of the season, only falling behind the game in Pacific in early February, where the Cardinal scored 23 goals.
In the first period, Stanford scored the first six goals of the match to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Lauren Silver scored a goal 25 seconds into the game and Christina Hewko followed with a goal right after Silver. Katie Hansen continued her stellar play and added two more goals within 30 seconds of each other midway through the period. With the game only four minutes old, Stanford held a 4-0 lead. Jessica Steffens scored a goal soon after and Silver added her second goal of the period. Meridith McColl almost had a shutout in the period, but Santa Clara driver Meg Zimmerman scored right before the horn and Stanford went into the break with a 6-1 lead.
Stanford put the game away in the second period by outscoring the Broncos 6-0 and building a very comfortable 12-1 lead. Hewko started the period off with her second goal and Jacquelyn Gauthier added two goals of her own early and Stanford lead 9-1. Christina Hewko then added her third goal of the game and Jessica Steffens added her second. Kellie Dunn added a goal for Santa Clara and after three periods the score was 17-2 in favor of Stanford.
The fourth period was a defensive struggle with only Kelly Donahue scoring a goal for either side right before the final horn. This gave Stanford an 18-2 victory, their 14th straight victory and an overall record of 16-1. Meridith McColl and Kate Heddleston also slowed down the Bronco attack by stopping two shots each in the win.
