Stanford had another fine game Sunday afternoon at the Avery Aquatics Center, beating the University of Maryland Terrapins 19-5 after beating the Santa Clara Broncos 18-2 earlier in the day. The Cardinal outscored its two opponents by a combined score of 37-7 and neither game was close after the first period. Katie Hansen had four goals and Lauren Silver had three goals, and the collective team defense kept the Broncos and Terrapins attacks at bay for most of the day.
Lauren Silver got things going with another early goal in the first period, 40 seconds into the match. Kira Hillman had an impressive overall game and scored the game's second goal two minutes after Silver. Christina Hewko scored a breakaway goal in the middle of the period and Katie Hansen scored two quick goals right before the end of the period to give Stanford a comfortable 5-0 lead. Blaise Stanicic scored for Maryland 50 seconds before the end of the period and Stanford held a 5-1 lead.
Maryland briefly got back into the game when Elizabeth Hopkins and Christen Vagts scored for the Terrapins and Stanford held a smaller 6-3 lead. The Cardinal then scored the final four goals of the period though to enter halftime with a 10-3 lead. Jacquelyn Gauthier and Jessica Steffens scored around two more Lauren Silver goals, with one coming 20 seconds before the end of the half.
The second half provided the crowd with more of the same as Kelly Donahue got the scoring started 21 seconds into the half with her second goal of the morning. Elizabeth Hopkins scored another goal for Maryland, but Stanford responded with the final four goals of the period to carry a 15-4 lead into the fourth period. Katie Hansen scored her third goal a minute after Hopkins scored and Alex Koran added a goal of her own with three minutes left in the period. Kelly Eaton scored 20 seconds later and Kira Hillman added her second goal right before the end of the period.
Kelsey Holshouser scored her first goal of the day at the start of the fourth period to extend the Cardinal lead to 16-4. Katie Hansen scored her fourth goal soon after and Alex Koran added her second goal of the match off a great pass from Heather West. Jessica Steffens added her second goal and finished off the 19-5 victory.
Stanford returns to the pool April 6th when they travel to Irvine, CA, to take on the University of California- Irvine. A match in Long Beach, CA against Long Beach State follows the day after on April 7th.
