College Park, MD - Despite holding the nation's No. 2 offense to just three goals in the second half, the Stanford women's lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Maryland 15-7 in a televised afternoon matchup on Wednesday. The Cardinal drops to 3-6 on the season, while the Terrapins improve to 9-1.

Maryland took control of the game early, getting on the board just 28 seconds into the match on a goal from senior attack Krista Pellizzi. The Terps followed the goal with two more unanswered goals from Pellizzi and senior midfield Katie Doolittle.

Stanford got in on the scoring at the 20:09 mark, getting its first goal from sophomore midfield Jamie Nesbitt to cut the lead to two goals. From there, the Terps went on a 5-0 run, taking an 8-1 lead with just under nine minutes left in the first half. The run saw two goals from Maryland junior midfield Dana Dobbie and Pellizzi's third goal of the game.

Freshman midfield Lauren Schmidt scored the second and final goal of the half for the Cardinal on a free position shot. A tough Maryland defense held Stanford scoreless for the final 6:29 of the first half. Meanwhile, the Terps offense continued to roll, reeling off four more goals before the end of the half, including another Doolittle goal at the buzzer which gave Maryland a 12-2 lead heading into the half. The Terps forced 18 Stanford turnovers in the first half, holding the Cardinal to just eight shots, while taking 22.

The Cardinal came out of the locker rooms as a different team, nearly tripling their first half scoring output in the final 30 minutes. Just two minutes into the second half, Nesbitt opened the scoring for Stanford on an unassisted goal. Two minutes later, Schmidt added her second goal of the game, cutting the lead to eight.

Maryland regained its 10-goal lead, answering with goals from junior midfields Lauren Cohen and Casey Magor to take a 14-4 advantage with 24:21 left in the game.

With 19:45 remaining, Schmidt posted her second free position goal of the game. The Cardinal went 4-for-10 on free position shots for the game. Pellizzi's fifth goal of the game three minutes after Schmidt's score would prove to be the last for the Terps on the day. The Stanford defense held Maryland scoreless over the final 16 minutes of the match, but the Cardinal was unable to come back from the 10-goal deficit. Senior attack Michelle DeChant and sophomore midfield Bess Siegfried added two final goals for Stanford.

Schmidt and Nesbitt were the only multiple goal scorers for the Cardinal, posting three and two scores respectively. DeChant and Siegfried joined Schmidt and Nesbitt as the only scorers for Stanford, while freshman midfield Julie Christy added the only assist for the Cardinal.

The Terps were led by Pellizzi's five goals and one assist for six points. Dobbie added three goals and one assist, while junior attack Katie Princiotto dished out three assists.

Junior goalkeeper Laura Shane made 14 saves on 29 Maryland shots on goal for the Cardinal, while scooping up five groundballs to lead the team in the loss. Terps junior goalie Allie Buote recorded 11 saves on 18 Cardinal shots on goal in the win.

Stanford wraps up its three-game road trip with No. 16 Vanderbilt. The Commodores enter Saturday's matchup with a 5-3 record overall after topping No. 8 Penn State last week. Vanderbilt is led by junior attack Margie Curran whose 20 goals and 29 points lead the team. VU boasts the reigning American Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week in senior midfield Nicole Pugno who posted three goals, including the game-winner, in the win over Penn State.
