Josh Hustedt took the decathlon title, while Kara Bennett placed fifth in the heptathlon for Stanford track and field on the final day competition at the Cal Multis in Berkeley, CA. Hustedt finished first in two of the five events contested on the men's side.
Hustedt grabbed first in the 110 meter hurdles as he posted a time of 14.68 to earn 889 points in the event. He then traveled over to the infield where he took tenth in the discuss throw with a toss of 100-4 ½ (30.61m) to earn 476 points. Hustedt once again took the top spot, this time doing it in the pole vault. His mark of 15-4 (4.70m) was good enough for first place and 819 points. In the javelin, Hustedt placed seventh with his toss of 150-7 ½ (45.95m) which was good enough for 529 points. In the final event of the competition, the 1500 meter run, he ran a 4:52.44 to claim seventh place while earning 604 points. Hustedt racked up a total of 7286 points to claim the decathlon title and move into fifth in the Stanford record books.
In the first event for the women, Bennett finished eighth as she posted a long jump mark of 15-8 (4.82m) earning 511 points. Next up was the javelin where she placed third with her throw of 129-2 ¾ (39.40m) to earn 656 points. In the 800 meter run, Bennett earned a fifth place finish as she ran to a time of 2:33.07 to receive 655 points. Overall, Bennett placed fifth in the heptathlon as she accumulated a total of 4387 points.
The team returns to action tomorrow at the Stanford Invitational which runs from March Friday-Saturday, March 30-31. Competition begins at 8:45 a.m. on Friday with the women's 5000 meters.
