The Stanford women's lacrosse team dropped their second game in a row, 16-10, to the University of Connecticut on Sunday at Maloney Field. UConn only held a three goal advantage at halftime, but extended the lead in the second half and finished the game with a six goal victory. The Cardinal fell to 1-4 on the young season and UConn improved its record to 2-1.
Stanford got the scoring going when junior Megan McClain tallied a goal four minutes into the game. The lead was short-lived, though, as UConn sophomore Whitney Michele found the back of the net thirty seconds later and the game was tied 1-1. After the two teams traded goals, UConn went on a run by scoring four unanswered goals and they held a 6-2 lead on the Cardinal halfway through the first half. Stanford fought back after the Husky scoring run when junior Daphne Patterson scored the first of her three goals and sophomore Maris Perlman added a score of her own. UConn added two more goals before the half to extend the lead to 8-4, but Patterson scored her second goal right before halftime to cut the Husky lead to 8-5 at the halftime break.
The second half started strong for the Cardinal as Patterson scored her third goal and Stanford was only behind by two goals with almost an entire half still to play. UConn senior Shannon Burke made things difficult for the Cardinal as she keyed another four goal burst by the Huskies to push the lead all the way out to 12-6. Stanford freshman Julie Christy added two quick goals after the burst, but Burke scored three goals in a five minute span to give the Huskies a commanding 16-9 lead with only four minutes left to play in the match.
Lauren Schmidt added a late goal for the Cardinal to cut the lead to the final score of 16-10. Schmidt and Patterson each led the Cardinal with three goals and Julie Christy chipped in two goals herself. Sophomore's Maris Perlman and Vicky Fanslow also contributed a goal each to the Stanford offense as did junior Megan McClain. Senior Shannon Burke scored six times for Connecticut and seniors Tori Joel and Kristin Link added three goals each.
Stanford returns to action this week on Friday, March 9th when they host No. 9 James Madison at 7:00 PM. The Cardinal also has a game on Sunday March 11th when they welcome Colgate at 1:00 PM. Both games will be held at Maloney Field on the Stanford campus.
