Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's lacrosse team fell to No. 7 James Madison 10-9 Friday night, extending its losing streak to four games. The game came down to the final minutes, with the Dukes' junior attack Annie Wagner scoring the eventual game winner with 5:05 remaining in the game. Though the Cardinal pulled within one in the final minutes, Stanford would not come any closer, handing the Dukes the win.
James Madison started the scoring off just two minutes into the game, but Stanford roared back with four unanswered goals. Sophomore attack Bis Fries made the most of her first start of the season, scoring the first two goals for the Cardinal just 36 seconds apart. During the 4-0 scoring run, junior attack Megan McClain and sophomore midfielder Bess Siegfried each added a goal, while the Stanford defense held the powerful JMU offense scoreless for a span of 17 minutes.
With 8:50 left in the first half, Dukes junior attack Natasha Fuchs pulled the momentum back into James Madison's favor, scoring the first of her three goals on the night. From there, the Dukes took control on the offensive end, going on their own 5-0 scoring run to finish out the first half.
JMU took a 6-4 lead into halftime, but the second half saw a new fire in the Cardinal attack. Sophomore midfielder Jamie Nesbitt pulled Stanford within one goal 1:26 into the second half. James Madison senior midfielder Lynlea Cronin answered with a free position goal six minutes later. Stanford responded with two goals from McClain who tied up the game at seven with 18:04 remaining after two unassisted goals.
The tie would not last long as Berger and junior attack Emily Haller each got through the Cardinal defense, posting goals at 14:49 and 13:37, respectively. Just 1:37 later, Fries notched her third goal of the night to close the JMU lead back to one. The two teams held each other scoreless for the next seven minutes before Wagner's game clincher. Stanford freshman midfielder Julie Christy's score with 3:49 left would be the final goal of the game.
Fries and McClain were the only multiple goal scorers for the Cardinal, posting three goals and one assist apiece. Nesbitt added a goal and an assist, while Siegfried and Christy each tallied one goal. Fuchs led the Dukes in scoring, posting three goals and two assists. Haller, Berger and Cronin notched two goals apiece for JMU. Dukes junior goalkeeper Kelly Wetzel posted 16 saves on 33 Cardinal shots in the win, while Stanford keeper Laura Shane made 11 saves, while facing 27 shots in the loss.
Stanford closes out its three game homestand looking to end its four game skid on Sunday, March 11. The Cardinal plays host to Colgate University at Maloney Field, with game time scheduled for 1:00 PM.
