Stanford, Calif. - Preston Guilmet struck out a career-high 15 batters and tossed a five-hitter to lead No. 13 Arizona (29-6, 7-0 Pac-10) to an 8-1 victory over Stanford (14-16, 0-7 Pac-10) in the opener of a three-game Pac-10 series at Sunken Diamond on Friday. Guilmet blanked the Cardinal for the final seven innings of his outing after giving up a Brian Juhl homer with one out in the bottom of the second. Arizona extended the longest win streak in NCAA Division I college baseball to 15 games, while the Cardinal lost for the seventh time in its last eight contests overall and has now started conference play with seven consecutive losses for the first time in school history.
"You have to give Preston Guilmet credit," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. "He really dominated us tonight, and we just didn't have the chance to get much get going."
Guilmet struck out the side four times and recorded 11 of the 12 outs from the fifth through eighth innings via strikeouts.
Guilmet still needed to spread out the five hits he allowed along with a walk, two hit batsmen and a pair of errors on Arizona shortstop Robert Abel. He allowed only a pair of runners besides Juhl to get into scoring position. Stanford put runners on second and third in the fifth with a walk, a hit batsmen and a wild pitch before Guilmet struck out Adam Sorgi to get out of the jam. Stanford also got a pair of runners on base with one out in the ninth when Toby Gerhart reached on Abel's second error before Cord Phelps came through with a single but Guilmet induced pinch-hitter Austin Yount into a game-ending double play.
T.J. Steele (3-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, SB) and C.J. Ziegler (3-5, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI) both homered and had three hits for the Wildcats, while Colt Sedbrook (3-5, 2B) and Brad Glenn (2-5, 2B, SB) each had a pair of hits.
Phelps (2-4) was the only Stanford player with more than one hit. Sorgi's career-high and team season-best hit streak ended at 12 games with an 0-for-4 performance.
Stanford starter Jeremy Bleich (1-6) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits, three walks and a hit batsmen with four strikeouts over the first 6.2 innings. Max Fearnow (2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 SO) closed out the game for the Cardinal.
The scoring started in the second inning when the teams traded runs on one-out solo shots from Steele in the top of the second and Juhl in the bottom of the frame.
Arizona went ahead to stay with three runs in the top of the fourth with Steele again providing most of the damage with a two-run double after Glenn had started the rally with a leadoff double before Jon Gaston walked. Steele stole third base and then scored on Dwight Childs' RBI triple.The Wildcats increased their lead to 5-1 in the fifth when Sedbrook doubled to start the frame, moved to third on a Bleich wild pitch and scored on an RBI double from Ziegler.
Arizona got one more run and ended Bleich's night in the seventh after Bleich hit Gaston with two outs and balked him to second before being relieved by Fearnow, who was greeted by Steele with an RBI single.The final two Arizona runs came on a two-run Ziegler homer in the ninth after Sedbrook had singled in front of him.

Stanford and Arizona will continue the series on Saturday and Sunday with scheduled start times each day at 1 pm, PT. Stanford is scheduled to go with RHP Jeffrey Inman (2-2, 6.02) on the mound Saturday, while Arizona will counter with LHP Brad Mills (7-2, 3.21). Sunday's game will serve as Community Day at Sunken Diamond and across the Stanford campus with Arizona RHP Ryan Perry (0-0, 6.19) slated to pitch for the Wildcats, while Stanford has yet to announce a probable starter for the series finale.
