No. 1 Stanford, less than 24 hours after an emotional win against No. 2 UCLA, took the pool again Sunday and defeated No. 12 ranked UCSB Gauchos by the score of 12-5. This MPSF game played at the Avery Aquatics Center, on the Stanford campus improved their record to 21-1 overall, and 10-0 in conference play. Christina Hewko led the way again with four goals and Meridith McColl stopped nine shots in the victory.
In the first quarter the game was very evenly contested. Christina Hewko continued her strong play and scored the first two goals of the game within the first three minutes of action. Just when it looked like Stanford was going to pull away early, UCSB driver Gillian Morgan scored a goal on a Stanford defensive breakdown off a missed a shot and cut the Stanford lead to 2-1. Lauren Silver answered back with a goal of her own at the 3:00 minute mark, but UCSB kept it close when Alisha Khan scored right before the end of the period to end the quarter with the score at 4-2.
The Cardinal started to open it up in the second quarter when they outscored the Gauchos 4-1. Jessica Steffens started the quarter with a goal and Christina Hewko scored soon after with her third goal of the match. After a Gaucho goal by Lindsay Knott, Jacquelyn Gauthier and Kira Hillman both scored for Stanford to give the Cardinal a 7-3 halftime lead. The last goal of the half was scored on a beautiful assist by Alison Gregorka to give Hillman the open shot.
Stanford continued the tight defense in the third quarter and only gave up one goal to the Gauchos in the period. Christina Hewko scored her fourth goal of the match and Lauren Silver and Jacquelyn Gauthier added their second goals of the afternoon. McColl had four saves in the quarter and Stanford led 10-4 going into the final eight minutes of play.
The fourth quarter had two more Stanford players get in the scoring action. Kelsey Holshouser scored three minutes into the quarter and Heather West scored on a penalty shot with two minutes remaining to get on the board. Kate Heddleston came in for the final four minutes of action to preserve the 12-5 victory.
Meridith McColl ended up with nine saves on the afternoon and Gaucho goalie Jenny Gonzales had six saves. With the win the Stanford winning streak has grown to 19 games with two more regular season games to play. Stanford returns to the pool next Friday for a 7:00 PM match against California in Berkeley, CA.
