Stanford, Calif. - After honoring its four seniors before their final home game at Maloney Field, the Stanford University women's lacrosse team sent them off on a good note, taking an 11-8 win over its rival Cal on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal used seven second-half goals to put away the Golden Bears after a 4-4 halftime tie. Stanford held the Bears to just four goals in each half, marking the lowest number of goals allowed by the Cardinal this season.
The two teams traded goals after Stanford junior attack Megan McClain kicked off the scoring, notching an unassisted goal just five minutes into play. With the Cardinal leading 3-2 at the 21 minute mark, Cal posted back-to-back goals to take a 4-3 lead on Laura Cavalloâ019s second and third scores of the game.
The lead did not last long, however, as Stanford junior midfield Daphne Patterson responded with to tie things up at four heading into the half. The Bay Area rivals had nearly identical first halves, with Stanford taking 12 shots and Cal taking 11. Cardinal junior goalkeeper Laura Shane made five first-half saves, while Cal's Hilary Lynch matched Shane with six saves of her own.
The second half saw Cal get on the scoreboard first, with a goal from Madeleine Dale just 1:54 into the half. The Cardinal answered just two minutes later, getting McClain's second goal of the day to even the score at five. Two minutes after that, senior midfield Liz Piselli gave Stanford its first back-to-back scores of the game on an assist from McClain.
The Bears kept it close, pulling even at six at the seven-minute mark, before Stanford caught fire, with three consecutive goals. Freshman midfield Julie Christy started off the run at the 10:38 mark receiving a pass from Patterson to give Stanford the 7-6 lead. Patterson posted her second goal of the day just three minutes later, while freshman attack Dana Lindsay capped the run on an assist from Piselli, giving the Cardinal a 9-6 advantage.
With 21 minutes remaining, Cal answered with back-to-back goals of their own from Laura Cavallo and Dani Zuralow, cutting the lead to one. After nearly six minutes of scoreless play, freshman midfield Lauren Schmidt and sophomore midfield Bess Siegfried ensured the Stanford victory with a goal apiece over the final six minutes of the game.
Patterson, Schmidt, McClain and Lindsay all scored two goals each to lead the Cardinal on Saturday. Siegfried and Christy added a goal apiece to complete the scoring for Stanford. Piselli dished out two assists, while McClain, Patterson, Schmidt and sophomore midfield Jamie Nesbitt each notched an assist. Cavallo posted four goals to lead the Bears, while Zuralow added three goals of her own.
Shane earned the win for Stanford, which improves to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in MPSF play. The junior made 12 saves on 20 shots on goal for the Cardinal. Lynch takes the loss, as the Bears fall to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in conference.
The Cardinal returns to action at UC Davis on Tuesday. First draw in Stanfordâ019s final MPSF matchup of the season is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on April 24 at Aggie Stadium in Davis, Calif.
