Stanford track and field finished a very exciting day of the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Seven Cardinal athletes captured first place during the competition, while also posting eight NCAA Regional Qualifying Marks.
On the men's side, Graeme Hoste captured first place in the pole vault as he recorded an NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark of 17-00 ¾ (5.20m). In the hammer throw, Kyle Daivs-Hammerquist took second place with his NCAA Regional Qualifying throw of 184-08 (56.29m). The 100 meter dash saw Daniel Belch take first place with a time of 10.93, while Ryan Fisicaro finished right behind in second place with his time of 11.10. In the shot put it was Michael Macellari taking first place, recording a season best and NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark of 56-03 (17.14m). Section one of the 800 meter run was a very fast heat, as Michael Garcia finished in fourth place with his season best and NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 1:49.22. In Section one of the 1500 meter run Russell Brown turned in an outstanding performance as he posted a personal best and moves into tenth all time at Stanford with his time of 3:41.51. Michael Robertson took first place in the discus throw as he recorded an NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark of 193-11 (59.10m).
The 3000 meter steeplechase saw Chris Mocko post a season best and NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 8:59.85. Also, in the race there were two Olympic "A" standards hit by Mircea Bogdan of UTEP (8:23.12), and Josh McAdams representing New Balance (8:23.69).
In the 10,000 meter run section one, Galen Rupp ran the third fastest collegiate time in history (fastest for an American born collegiate runner) with his amazing time of 27:33.48.
Hari Mix recorded a third place finish in the second section of the 5,000 meter run as he recorded a season best and NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 14:03.20.
For the women, the Cardinal swept the top three spots in the javelin, though they were the only three competitors in the event. Jaynie Goodbody took first place with her throw of 136-08 (41.65m), followed by Kara Bennet (125-01; 38.13m) and Lauren Stewart (114-00; 34.75m). In the hammer throw, Jaynie Goodbody finished in second place with her season best and NCAA Regional Qualifying throw of 180-01 (54.88m). Melissa Yunghans earned a first place finish in the shot put with her throw of 46-06 ¼ (14.18m). In the high jump it was Tessa Flippin taking the top spot as she posted a height of 5-07 (1.70m). Section one of the 5000 meter run saw Arianna Lambie move into fifth place all time as Stanford as she earned third place with an NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 15:31:34.
The 10,000 meter run saw Jen Rhines run the fastest time in the world this year, and the fourth fastest ever as she posted a time of 31:17.31. The top three finishers in the race (Amy Hastings - 33:58.65, Kim Smith - 31:20.63, Katie McGregor - 31:37.82) all qualified for the 2007 World Championships, and the 2008 Olympic Games. Also, Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech set a new collegiate record as she posted a time of 31:56.72.
The Cardinal return to action on Saturday-Sunday, May 5-6 and May 12-13 as Stanford plays host to the 2007 Pac-10 Conference Track and Field Championships, presented by 76 Gasolines.
