After the first day of competition at the NCAA West Regional in Eugene, Oregon, seven Cardinal finished in the top five in their event final to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, while eight have qualified to compete in tomorrow's finals. The women are currently tied for third place with Oregon at 20 points, while the men head to tomorrow in fourth place with 15.5 points.
On the men's side, Graeme Hoste qualified for the NCAA Championships with his fourth place finish in the pole vault as he recorded a height of 17-05 (5.31m).
In the 5000 meter run, Jacob Gomez took third place as he qualified for the NCAA Championships with his time of 14:11.82. Hari Mix finished right behind his teammate in fourth place with a time of 14:12.16, as he too qualified for the NCAA Championships.
In the discus, Michael Robertson qualified for the NCAA Championships with his fifth place finish and a distance of 193-02 (58.89m).
Russell Brown (3:45.30) and Garrett Heath (3:51.06) qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 1500 meter run as they finished in second and third place, respectively.
In the 800 meter prelims it was Michael Garcia qualifying in the fourth spot with his time of 1:50.18.
The other Stanford men with a chance of being selected to the NCAA Championships includes, Kyle Davis-Hammerquist (hammer - 22nd; 179-11, 54.83m), Daniel Schaerer (discus - 9th; 187-07, 57.17m), Rolf Steier (1500 meters - 13th; 3:47.90), Lauren Jespersen (1500 metes - 16th; 3:49.03), Brett Gotcher (1500 meters - 17th; 3:49.42)
For the women, Teresa McWalters took the title in the 5000 meter run, advancing to the NCAA Championships with her season best time of 16:04.92.
Erica McLain took second place in the long jump as she qualified for the NCAA Championships with her leap of 20-10 (6.35m).
In the shot put it was Michaela Wallerstedt earning a fourth place finish and qualifying for the NCAA Championships with her season best mark of 48-04 ¾ (14.75m).
Arianna Lambie qualified for the finals as the top runner in the 1500 meter run prelims with her time of 4:19.55. Alicia Follmar ran a season best 4:20.10 to qualify for the finals in the third spot, while Lauren Centrowitz qualified in eighth place with a time of 4:23.60.
In the 100 meter dash prelims, it was Janice Davis qualifying for the finals with a third place finish with her season best time of 11.56. Jakki Bailey qualified in the sixth spot with her time of 11.70. Davis then took third place in the 200 meter dash prelims as she recorded a season best time of 23.52.
The other Stanford women with a chance of being selected to the NCAA Championships includes, Danielle Maier (javelin - 9th; 152-10, 46.59m), Lauren Stewart (high jump - 9th; 5-07 ¼, 1.71m), Melissa Yunghans (shot put - 13th; 47-11 ¾, 14.62m), Sarah Matthew (100 meter dash - 10th, 11.96), Ashley Freeman (800 meters - 9th, 2:08.51), Jakki Bailey (200 meters - 11th, 24.23)
Action continues tomorrow with the field events begging at 11:00 a.m. (men's javelin), and the field events starting at 1:30 p.m. (men's 4x100 meter relay).
