Stanford captured their third consecutive MPSF Conference championship Sunday afternoon with a 12-11 victory over Denver University on the campus of UC-Davis. Daphne Patterson led the way with four goals and Liz Piselli was right behind with three more goals in the win.
The Cardinal was able to secure a 6-4 halftime lead in a very close first half. Liz Piselli scored two goals close to the halftime to give the Cardinal the halftime edge. The shots on goal were also very even with the Cardinal holding an 11-10 shot advantage.
Stanford then raced out in the second half and scored the first four goals to have a commanding 10-4 lead. The comfortable lead was short lived though, as Denver answered with four goals and the game was close again with a 10-8 score. Stanford then scored the next two goals when Claire Hubbard and Daphne Patterson found the back of the net. Denver finished the game by scoring the final three goals, but it wasn't enough, and Stanford ended with a 12-11 victory and another MPSF Championship. Goalie Laura Shane had six saves in the victory.
Stanford also had three All-Tournament performers in senior Liz Piselli, junior Daphne Patterson, and junior Katharine Fox and goalie Laura Shane was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
