Lindsay Allen's Record Setting Performance Highlights Opening Day Of NCAA Championships

The NCAA Championships got underway today at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State. Eight of the 11 Cardinal athletes competing in qualifying events advanced to the next round competition, while Josh Hustedt sits in sixth place in the decathlon which continues tomorrow morning.

Men
DECATHLON
The decathlon go underway with the 100 meter dash as junior Josh Hustedt posted a tenth place finish out of 26 competitors with his time of 11.22 to score 812 points.

For the second event, Hustedt moved to the long jump where he leaped to a second place finish, earning 900 points with his mark of 24-01 ¾ (7.36m). After two events, Hustedt sits in a tie for third place with 1712 points. Junior Jangy Addy of Tennessee took first in both events, as he holds the lead with 1791 points.

The shot put was next, as Hustedt finished in 25th place as the posted a distance of 36-01 ¼ (11.00m) on his second attempt, earning 546 points. Once again, Addy of Tennessee took the top spot as he recorded a distance of 51-00 ¾ (15.56m).

In the high jump, Hustedt earned a third place finish with a mark of 6-07 ½ (2.02m), earning 822 points. He managed to pass 1.99 meters on his final attempt to pick up an extra 55 points over those who could not make the height.

The final event of the day, the 400 meter dash, Hustedt got off to an early lead but was soon passed and fell into second place. Down the home stretch Hustedt managed to dig deep and re-pass Mateo Sossah of North Carolina to take the top spot in section one, 11th place overall, with his time of 50.56 to earn 789 points.

Heading into the final day of the decathlon, Hustedt sits in sixth place with 3869 points. Jangy Addy of Tennessee holds first place with his first day total of 4211 points.

The decathlon resumes tomorrow with the 110 meter hurdles beginning at 10:00 a.m.

TRACK
Heat two of the 5,000 meter run semifinals saw both senior Jacob Gomez and sophomore Hari Mix post qualifying times for Friday's final at 7:45 p.m. Through the first 400 meters it was Gomez in second, while Mix ran in ninth place. Both runners managed to move up after the two kilometers, with Gomez taking over the top spot from Samuel Chelanga of FDU and Mix moving up three spots into sixth. With three laps left in the race, Gomez had dropped back into third, while Mix stayed steady in sixth place. As they came down the home stretch, both runners dropped a bit as the field put in their finishing kick. Gomez earned an eighth place finish in the heat, 14th place overall, with his time of 13:58.06. Mix posted a tenth place heat finish, 16th overall, in a time of 14:00.01.

Junior Michael Garcia represented the Cardinal in flight one of the 800 meter run prelims. Garcia ran to the front of the pack early in the first 400 meters, then settled into second place by the end of the first lap. Garcia could not keep the pace however, as he finished in sixth place, 19th place overall, with a time of 1:49.62.

FIELD
Junior Graeme Hoste tied for second place in the qualifying round of the pole vault as he recorded a height of 16-10 ¾ (5.15m) to qualify for the finals on Friday at 6:15 p.m. Hoste passed on the opening height of 5.00 meters and was able to clear his qualifying height on the second attempt. He then decided to pass on the next height of 5.30 meters as he knew he had already qualified for the finals.

In the discus throw it was senior Michael Robertson qualifying for the finals, taking second place in flight one and overall as he posted a mark of 199-02 (60.71m) on his first throw and decided to pass his next two having hit the automatic mark. Junior Daniel Schaerer recorded a distance of 180-11 (55.14m) on his final throw to finish eighth in flight two and 17th overall, missing the qualifying mark by a little over one meter.

Women
TRACK
In section two of the 800 meter qualifying run, senior Ashley Freeman moved her way to the front of the pack early and grabbed the lead with 200 meters to go. However, down the home stretch she was out kicked and fell to fifth place. Her 16th place overall finish and time of 2:07.23 was good enough to qualify for the semifinal run being held tomorrow at 5:05 p.m.

Seniors Janice Davis and Jakki Bailey ran in section four of the 100 meter dash qualifying round. Davis posted her season best time of 11.50 as she finished fourth in the section and 17th out of 29 competitors overall to qualify for the semifinals taking place later in the evening. Bailey posted a seventh place finish in the section, 22 place overall, with her time of 11.61.

In heat one of the 100 meter dash semifinals, Janice Davis turned in a solid effort, but will not advance to the event finals as she finished in seventh place, 16th place overall, with her time of 11.65.

Lindsay Allen turned in an amazing performance in heat one of the 3000 meter steeplechase prelims as she broke the Stanford and Pac-10 records with her time of 10:01.53, earning one of the 14 qualifing spots for the finals on Friday at 7:10 p.m. Allen ran in sixth place nearly the entire race, and barley missed out on a fifth place finish as she came up just short of out sprinting Amy Fowler of BYU, finishing 11th overall.

In heat two of the 5,000 meter semifinals it was Teresea McWalters earning a bid to Friday's final at 8:10 p.m. as she posted a time of 16:05.92. After the first 400 meters McWalters was hanging back in 11th place out of the 13 runners. With two kilometers down McWalters had moved up eight spots into third place. She then took over the lead with 1,000 meters to go in the race, leading the defending champion Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech. As the runners came down the final stretch, McWalters dropped back into a fourth place heat finish and seventh place overall.

FIELD
Junior Erica McLain began her quest for a national title today in the long jump. With a foul on her first attempt and a mark of only 6.18 meters on her second, she was in danger of not even qualifying for the finals as she sat in 12th place. The competitor that she is, McLain was not phased by the pressure as she posted a mark of 20-07 (6.27m) on her last jump to finish eighth and qualify for the finals tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
