2007 scheduleSTANFORD, Calif.- Stanford blanked Pacific 1-0 in a field hockey scrimmage Tuesday morning at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf, signaling the start of the 2007-08 athletic campaign.
The only scoring of the contest came with just over three minutes remaining in the second period, as senior Jess Zutz (Wilmington, Del.) found the net following an assist from sophomore Rachel Mozenter (Gahanna, Ohio). Zutz came close to scoring earlier in the game on a couple close misses and Mozenter nearly gave the Cardinal a 2-0 lead late in the third period.
Senior Madison Bell (Worthington, Ohio) started in goal, playing the first and third periods while freshman Alessandra Moss held Pacific scoreless in the second frame to complete the shutout.
The teams played three 25-minute periods. Statistics from the game do not count toward season totals.
"This was a promising start," said head coach Lesley Irvine. "We were looking to get everyone some playing time. We have a lot of depth this year and players who can fill in at different positions."
The Cardinal hosts California next Tuesday in the second of three scrimmages this year. Stanford then hosts Boston College in the season opener on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m.
Stanford's 16-game regular-season schedule features eight home contests. In addition, Stanford will also host this year's NorPac Championship for the first time since 2002, with the three-day tournament slated for Nov. 1-3.
In 2006, Stanford finished 9-10 overall for its highest victory total since winning 10 games in 2002. The Cardinal's performance in conference play was particularly impressive, as the squad took second in regular-season conference play by posting a 5-1 record. The effort secured Stanford a first-round berth in the conference championship tournament, with the Cardinal eventually advancing to the championship game. With leading scorer Jess Zutz and starting goalkeeper Madison Bell anchoring a group of key returners, Stanford is focused on achieving its first winning season since an 11-8 finish in 2001.
