Stanford And California Play To 2-2 Tie In Scrimmage

Aug. 21, 2007

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford and California played to a 2-2 tie in a scrimmage at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf on Tuesday. Stanford came back from a 2-0 deficit with two second half goals after the Golden Bears had jumped out to a two-goal lead on a pair of early second half scores following a scoreless first half.

California's Ashley Glosz scored both goals for the Golden Bears, putting the first dent on the scoreboard just 36 seconds into the second half at 35:36 on an assist by Christina McGrath. Glosz added an unassisted goal just over four minutes later at 39:54 by knocking in a shot after the ball had bounced around following a penalty corner.

Stanford cut the lead to 2-1 when Lisa Maffucci converted on an assist from Katherine Swank at 43:58. The Cardinal tied the contest when Jess Zutz tapped in a ball that Bailey Richardson centered at 67:02.

"Jess is an excellent finisher," said Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine. "We are expecting a huge season out of her."

"We're definitely a new team this year," offered Zutz. "In my previous three seasons, we probably would have let our heads drop and played to prevent any more goals. But this team got stronger and angry when we were down two goals. It took us a bit to settle into the game, but when we did we really started connecting."

The teams did not play overtime.

Stanford will open the 2007 regular season schedule with a home contest versus Boston College at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf this Saturday, August 25 (1 pm, PT).
