Balanced Offensive Attack Sparks 3-1 Field Hockey Win

Sept. 1, 2007

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - A balanced offensive attack that featured 30 shot attempts and goals from three different players proved to be the difference in Stanford's 3-1 victory over Missouri State in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.

One week after being outshot 17-6 in a 2-1 upset over No. 9 Boston College, Stanford (2-0) owned a commanding 30-4 advantage in shot attempts over Missouri State (0-3). Stanford's 30 shots were the most since the club held a 31-6 edge in that category during a 5-1 rout of Columbia back on Sept. 3, 2006.

The Cardinal's offensive production was a complete team effort, with three different players finding the net and five different players registering at least three shots apiece. Senior Jess Zutz (Wilmington, Del.) paced Stanford with eight shot attempts, including her team-leading third goal of the year to knot the game at 1-1.

Freshmen Camille Gandhi (London, England) and Xanthe Travlos (Staffordshire, England) each recorded their first collegiate goals for Stanford, which also held a 12-1 edge in penalty corners while totaling 14 shots in the first half and 16 in the second.

Senior Madison Bell (Worthington, Ohio) picked up her second win in goal, making three saves on the afternoon as she was rarely tested.

Missouri State got on the scoreboard first at the 25:33 mark when Amanda Miyashita scored unassisted for a 1-0 lead as she tipped in a loose ball off a rebound. Miyashita led the Bears with two shot attempts.

Stanford answered back five minutes later when Zutz redirected a ball into the net following a pass to the near post from Gandhi. The scored remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.

At the 50:29 mark of the second period, the Cardinal claimed a 2-1 lead. Travlos, who ripped off five shots, fired a shot past Missouri State keeper Kim Kinsella off a give-and-go from junior Hillary Braun (Holland, Ohio).

Stanford padded its lead to 3-1 in the 70th minute thanks to a score from Gandhi, who finished with four shots. Junior Bailey Richardson (Los Gatos, Calif.) crossed a pass off a penalty corner to Gandhi, who ripped a quick strike into the back of the cage.

Junior Caroline Hussey (Houston, Texas) also contributed four shots for Stanford, which has started the year 2-0 for the first time since 2002.

Stanford wraps up its homestand on Sunday, Sept. 2, against Pacific in the NorPac opener for both teams.
