Sept. 7, 2007

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif.- Matching its best start since a 5-0 run in 1979, Stanford notched its fifth consecutive win to open the year with an 8-1 drubbing of Davidson on Friday night.

Once again, offensive dominance translated into a lop-sided victory for the Cardinal (5-0, 3-0 NorPac), which was playing the first of two neutral site conference matches in Longwood, Va.

Stanford held a decisive 25-5 edge in shot attempts, owned a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners and scored four goals in each half against a Davidson (2-1, 0-1 NorPac) squad that was overmatched from the outset.

Senior Jess Zutz (Wilmington, Del.) and sophomore Rachel Mozenter (Gahanna, Ohio) scored two goals apiece to lead the charge. Zutz, who also recorded two assists, fired off a game-best seven shots while Mozenter added six.

Zutz, who now leads the Cardinal with six goals on the season, opened the scoring at the 14:53 mark following an assist from freshman Camille Gandhi (London, England).

Freshman Xanthe Travlos (Staffordshire, England) made it 2-0 one minute later, scoring off assists from freshman Jaimee Erickson (Los Gatos, Calif.) and sophomore Marlana Shile (Los Gatos, Calif.).

After Davidson cut the lead to 2-1, Stanford received goals from Shile and Mozenter to close out the first period and take a 4-1 lead into the break.

Gandhi opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the year at the 40:10 mark, thanks to a second assist from Zutz, who found the net five minutes later to give Stanford a 6-1 edge.

Junior Caroline Hussey (Houston, Texas) and Mozenter capped the scoring in the 54th and 60th minutes, respectively, at 8-1.

Stanford faces Appalachian State on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 12 p.m. PST.
