Cal Edges No. 20 Stanford To Claim NorPac Lead

Sept. 23, 2007

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif.- Ashley Glosz scored twice in the second half, leading California to a 2-1 victory over No. 20 Stanford in Berkeley on Sunday afternoon in a key early-season NorPac contest.

California (6-1, 4-0) dealt Stanford (6-1, 4-1) its first loss of the year, spoiling the Cardinal's bid for its first seven-game winning streak since 1998. The victory also gives the Golden Bears sole possession of first place in the NorPac standings and the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage.

Stanford was searching for its first win over rival California in 16 meetings, a stretch that dates back to a 1-0 Cardinal shutout on Oct. 6, 2001. Appearing in the national rankings for the first time in six years thanks to one of the most explosive offenses in the country, the Cardinal looked poised to snap the skid.

Instead, Glosz broke a 1-1 tie in the 56th minute with her fifth goal of the year for the game-winner. Of California's 17 consecutive victories in the series, 12 have been decided by one goal.

Stanford opened the scoring early in the second period following a scoreless first half that included a 6-3 shot advantage by the Cardinal.

Sophomore Rachel Mozenter (Gahanna, Ohio) found the net for the fourth time this season when she gave Stanford a 1-0 lead at the 40:13 mark. Mozenter was assisted on the play by freshman Camille Gandhi (London, England), her third helper of the year.

Eight minutes later, California knotted the match at 1-1 following the first score of the day from Glosz. Christina McGrath and Rachel Moffitt were credited with assists.

In the 56th minute, Glosz put home the game-winner following a pass from Kellie York for a 2-1 win.

Both teams fired off 10 shots while Stanford held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. For the season, the Cardinal has now outshot its opponents 138-48 while owning a 75-29 mark in penalty corners.

The physical contest featured a combined 52 fouls (29 by Stanford, 23 by California).

Both of Mozenter's shots were on goal, while senior Jess Zutz (Wilmington, Del.) and freshman Xanthe Travlos (Staffordshire, England) also chipped in with two shots.

Senior Madison Bell (Worthington, Ohio) suffered her first loss of the year in goal, making four saves in 70 minutes of action.

Stanford returns home for the first time since Sept. 2 when it hosts California on Friday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m. That match will not count toward the NorPac standings. Stanford's final regular season league match is slated for Oct. 30 against Radford.
