STANFORD, Calif.- Melissa Martin and Hilary Moore each scored twice as No. 3 Wake Forest posted an 8-0 shutout over Stanford on Monday afternoon at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
Stanford (7-4, 4-1 NorPac) was held scoreless for the first time since Sept. 1, 2006- a 6-0 defeat to Wake Forest at home. The Cardinal has dropped its first two games on a challenging six-game, non-conference stretch that features matchups against three programs ranked among the nation's top-15.
Monday's defeat came at the hands of Wake Forest, the 2006 national runner-up and three-time national champion. The Demon Deacons finished 22-2 overall last year, captured the ACC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA championship match for the fifth time in the last six years.
Wake Forest applied offensive pressure from the start, scoring three times in the first 20 minutes to establish a 5-0 halftime lead. The Demon Deacons also held advantages in shots (21-8) and penalty corners (10-3).
Freshman Xanthe Travlos led Stanford with three shots while junior Hillary Braun added two.
Liz Fries put the Demon Deacons up 1-0 with a goal in the ninth minute before Michelle Kasold and Martin scored to make it 3-0 before the 20:00 mark.
Scores from Regina Shannon in the 24th minute and Martin again at the 25:10 mark pushed the lead to 5-0 at the break.
Moore tallied back-to-back goals in the 58th and 61st minutes, respectively, while Lauren Love rounded out the scoring with her first of the year at the 67:23 mark.
Stanford hits the road for three straight games beginning Friday at Louisville.
