STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford's impressive start to the season was due in large part to an explosive offensive attack.
That same offensive prowess was displayed again on Saturday afternoon, as Stanford established season-highs in goals and shot attempts during a 10-2 rout of Georgetown in Lexington, Ky.
The lop-sided victory comes at a good time for the Cardinal, which had dropped three in a row and five of six overall since beginning the year 6-0. Stanford now stands at 8-5 overall and will play its final road game of the regular season against Indiana on Monday.
Losers of seven straight contests, Georgetown (2-13, 0-4 Big East) has now been outscored 69-28 by its opponents this year.
Conversely, Stanford has owned advantages in goals scored (38-27) and shot attempts (223-133) over its foes this year. That's impressive considering the Cardinal scored 48 goals and fired off 261 shots all of last season. Stanford has three regular season games left to play before the NorPac Tournament gets underway Nov. 1-3 at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
On Saturday against the Hoyas, six Cardinal players found the net. Stanford scored five goals in each half, held a 34-11 edge in shot attempts and took nine penalty corners.
Xanthe Travlos registered three goals while Rachel Mozenter and Bailey Richardson scored two apiece. Mozenter and Hillary Braun also each contributed two assists, and Jess Zutz led all players with eight shots.
Five of Stanford's 10 goals were scored as a direct result of a penalty corner, including four in the first half.
After Mozenter made it 1-0 with an unassisted goal at the 3:55 mark of the first half, Travlos put home the first of her three scores following a penalty corner in the seventh minute.
Georgetown cut the lead to 2-1, but Travlos found the net twice more on penalty corner opportunities and Mozenter added her second goal of the day between those scores. Mozenter and Braun provided assists on both of Travlos' goals, as the Cardinal outshot the Hoyas 22-5 in the first half.
Marlana Shile increased the Stanford lead to 6-1 in the 44th minute when she dribbled in from 25 yards out and shot from the top right of the circle. Ten minutes later, Braun found the net for her first goal of the year to make it 7-1.
Midori Uehara, who notched her first career goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Louisville yesterday, scored her second goal in two days when she took a pass from Zutz and fired it to the left side of the cage past Hoya goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo.
Georgetown answered back with a goal at the 59:32 mark from Lindsay Moramarco, slicing the lead to 8-2.
Richardson then closed out the scoring, finding the net twice unassisted in the game's final six minutes.
Travlos ripped off seven shots while Braun chipped in with six. Goalkeeper Madison Bell made four saves in the win.
Stanford closes out its three-game road against Indiana on Monday in a 10 a.m. PST contest.
