STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford women's tennis will be well-represented on the final day of competition at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Monday in both singles and doubles.
Front and center on both sides will be junior Jessica Nguyen, who will oppose California's Cristina Visico in the singles final (12:15 p.m.) after teaming with freshman Hilary Barte against Fresno State's Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova in a doubles semifinal (11 a.m.).
Nguyen punched her ticket to the singles final with two victories on Sunday. She first defeated teammate Carolyn McVeigh 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to end the freshman's impressive run through the draw. Then she outlasted California's Bojana Bobusic 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Nguyen is seeded No. 4 in the field while Visico checks in at No. 10. Four of the tournament's top five seeds, including No. 3 Celia Durkin and No. 5 Lindsay Burdette, were bounced along the way.
Of the two Stanford doubles squads that reached the quarterfinals, only the duo of Nguyen and Barte remains alive for Monday's semifinals after posting an 8-6 win over Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong.
The Cardinal's second team of Burdette and Durkin was nipped by California's Marina Cossou and Claire Ilcinkas 9-8 (5) on Sunday.
