STANFORD, Calif.- Junior Jessica Nguyen posted a 6-1, 7-5 victory over California's Cristina Visico on Monday, capturing the singles championship on the final day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Ranked No. 15 nationally and seeded No. 4 in the tournament, Nguyen's victory guarantees her an automatic berth to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, slated for Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio.
After easily winning the first set 6-1, Nguyen raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. But Visico battled to take a 5-4 advantage before Nguyen stormed back to win the final three games.
Nguyen was participating in the doubles semifinals on Monday with freshman Hilary Barte. However, the duo was edged 8-6 by Fresno State's Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova.
Stanford is back in action Nov. 1-4, with some members of the team competing at the Arizona State Invitational and others playing in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
