No. 1 Stanford synchronized swimming defeated UAB on Saturday by a score of 90-61. The Cardinal remained undefeated with their fourth victory of the season.
Stanford swept the top two spots in the trio event with the team of Elizabeth-Anne Markman, Sara Lowe and Courtenay Stewart taking first. The other Cardinal team of Samantha Bongiovanni-Duclos, Melissa Knight and Debbie Chen finished in second place.
The duo event yielded the same results as the trio, with Stanford claiming first and second place. Lowe and Stewart once again teamed up to take the top spot, while Bongiovanni-Duclos and Markman earned a second place finish.
Lowe continued her impressive run as she finished first in the solo event, earning her third first place finish of the competition. She found a way to win while only being able to do two of the figures out of her routine because half of the UAB pool is five feet or shallower.
The Cardinal had to modify their team routine once again because of the lack of pool depth. During the lifts, the team was forced to sit underwater and wait for the next part of the routine, leaving much less content to be judged. In the end, Stanford was able to overcome the home pool advantage of UAB and earn the top spot for the fourth time this season.
"Considering the circumstances, our team did very well," stated head coach Heather Olson. It will be great to have UAB and Wheaton at Stanford on Saturday. I am interested to see how the judges score our routines against UAB when we swim full routines."
The Cardinal return to the Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday, February 17 at 4:00pm as they take on Wheaton College and UAB.
