Stanford Edges USC 10-8 in Overtime

Feb. 17, 2007

Stanford was able to hold off a late regulation goal and hang on to beat USC 10-8 at the Avery Aquatics Center. The Cardinal, ranked third in the nation, was led by sophomore Lauren Silver, who scored three goals in the game. Freshmen Kelly Eaton and junior Jacquelyn Gauthier each had two goals for the Cardinal, while senior Christina Hewko was able to find the net twice herself. Senior goalie Meredith McColl had an exceptional game in the net, blocking seven USC shots.

Stanford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter behind goals by Jacquelyn Gauthier, Lauren Silver and Christina Hewko. USC senior Patty Cardenas added a late penalty goal, and the teams ended the first period with Stanford holding a 3-1 lead.

In the second quarter, the teams engaged in a defensive battle before Trojan sophomore Kami Craig scored right before the two minute mark and the cut the Stanford lead in half to 3-2. Lauren Silver quickly responded with a second goal of her own 13 seconds later and pushed Stanford out in front 4-2. USC ended the quarter strong behind two goals in the final 1:28 of the quarter. This eliminated the Cardinal lead, and the two teams went into halftime tied 4-4.

The third quarter provided continued strong defense by both squads. Stanford was shut out in the period and USC was only able to find the net once when Patty Cardenas scored her second goal midway through the period and gave the Trojans their first lead of the game 5-4, heading into the fourth quarter.

Stanford regained its offense in the fourth quarter and was able to add three goals by Eaton, Gauthier and Hewko which gave the Cardinal a 7-6 lead after a second goal by Craig of USC. Stanford seemed to have the game in hand 7-6 late, but Cardenas tallied her third goal of the match with eight seconds left and forced the teams to play an overtime period.USC started the overtime with a quick goal but then the Cardinal found the net three more times behind Hewko, Eaton and sophomore Jennifer Steffens and held on to win 10-8.

Stanford improves to 6-1 and 3-0 in MPSF play while USC falls to 5-2. Stanford was able to defeat the Trojans after USC beat the Cardinal earlier this month by a score of 8-6.

Stanford returns to action Feb. 18 with a home game against Cal-State Northridge at 1:00 pm.
