No. 3 Stanford Defeats Cal State Northridge 9-2

Feb. 18, 2007

Stanford gained control of the match early and was able to cruise to a 9-2 victory over Cal State Northridge at the Avery Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal was paced by freshmen Kelly Donohue who finished the match with three goals, which put Stanford in firm control early in the match. Overall, six Cardinal players found the back of the net on the day, and freshmen goalie Kate Heddleston held the Matadors to a season-low two goals.

Lauren Silver started things out in the first period with a goal less than two minutes in the match, which set the tone for the rest of the day. Senior Katie Hansen followed with a goal of her own three minutes later, and Freshmen Kelly Eaton scored another 30 seconds after Hansen. A late turnover by the Matadors late in the quarter led to a fourth goal for the Cardinal, scored by Senior Christina Hewko, with only a second remaining on the clock. After the first quarter of play, the Cardinal had a commanding 4-0 lead.

The Matadors came out aggressive in the second period but still weren't able to figure out goalie Kate Heddleston as the freshmen turned away four shots in the period. Freshmen Kelly Donahue shined in the second period scoring two goals, and a penalty goal by Hansen gave the Cardinal a 7-0 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter provided great goalkeeping as Heddleston turned away three more shots, and Matador freshmen Jillian Stapf blocked five Cardinal shots in the period. Donahue then added her third goal of the march in the quarter, and the Matadors got on the board when Junior Dayna Van Gorder scored with a minute left in the period. Heading into the fourth quarter the Cardinal was still out in front by a score of 8-1.

In the fourth quarter, Kara Hillman was able to score her third goal of the season to extend the lead to 9-1. A late Matador goal by Junior Allison Brookes cut the lead to 9-2, which ended up as being the final score at the Avery Aquatics Center.

Stanford improved its record to 7-1 and remained a perfect 4-0 in MPSF play. Cal State Northridge dropped to 3-7 on the season.Stanford returns to action as they compete in the Irvine Tourney next weekend in Irvine, CA. The next Cardinal home game is March 24th at 10:00 am, as the Cardinal take on Princeton.
