No. 3 Stanford defeated Cal 7-5 in their fourth match of the tournament. The Cardinal finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, which was good enough for a third place finish in this years Stanford Invitational. Christina Hewko led the Cardinal offense with three goals in a rather low scoring contest. Kelly Donahue, Heather West, Jessica Steffens and Lauren Silver each scored one goal for Stanford. Meridith McColl was back in the goal for the Cardinal and recorded eight saves in the match.
Cal got on the board first in the opening quarter, but Stanford came right back with a goal from Donahue to knot things up at one. The two teams traded goals once again, with Cal scoring first, while the Cardinal responded with a goal from Donahue. Stanford was able to close out the quarter with two goals in a row, the first coming from Steffens, and the second from Silver with eight seconds left on the clock.
The second quarter was a defensive battle, as neither team was able to put one past the goalkeeper. The defense was so good that McColl only had to make one save, while Stuart for Cal only needed to make two. Stanford was able to take a narrow 4-3 lead into the half.
After the break, the superb defense continued. Stanford's Hewko was the only player to score in the third quarter, as she was able to get free from her sister Camille Hewko of Cal. With only one goal coming in the last two quarters combined, Stanford held the lead 5-3.
The offenses got back on track in the final quarter. Starting the scoring off was Cal as they tallied their first goal in over two quarters. The Cardinal were able to respond however, as Hewko took the game over, scoring her second and third goals of the match. Cal managed to put one in with fifteen seconds left on the clock, but it was not enough, as Stanford emerged victorious by a score of 7-5.
