Stanford, Calif. - UCLA (11-14, 1-0 Pac-10) scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning and added three more in the eighth on the way to an 8-2 victory over Stanford (13-10, 0-1 Pac-10) in the Pac-10 opener for both clubs at Sunken Diamond on Friday night. Jermaine Curtis (2-5, 2B, 4 RBI, SB) and Ryan Babineau (2-4, 2 RBI) led the Bruin offense, while Tyson Brummett tossed his third complete game of the season. Brummett improved to 4-4 overall, striking out nine and spreading out six hits while walking two and allowing just one earned run.

Joey August extended his career-high hit streak to nine games with a ninth inning single

Michael Taylor blasted a mammoth solo homer off the center field batters' eye with one out in the bottom of the ninth and the Cardinal managed to load the bases on a Joey August single and walks to Jason Castro and pinch-hitter Brendan Domaracki before Brummett struck out pinch-hitter Randy Molina to end the game. August extended his career-high hit streak to nine with his ninth inning single.

Gabe Cohen's one-out solo homer started the Bruin fourth inning rally and put UCLA on the scoreboard first. Tim Stewart restarted the rally with a one-out single before walks to Alden Carrithers and Brady Dolan loaded the bases with two outs for Babineau, who bounced a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-0 in favor of UCLA. Curtis followed with another two-out, two-run single up the middle to cap the rally.

After sending the minimum number of batters to the plate in the first four frames, Stanford managed an unearned run in the fifth when Castro reached on a one-out error by Bruin shortstop Brandon Crawford and scored when Brian Juhl connected on a two-out RBI double.

The score remained 5-1 until the Bruins' three-run eighth off Cardinal relievers Black Hancock (0.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB) and Erik Davis (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO). Hancock walked Carrithers and hit Justin Uribe before Dolan moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Davis came into the game and wild pitched in a run before allowing an infield single to Babineau and a two-run double to Curtis before getting out of the inning.

Stanford starter Jeremy Bleich (1-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 5.0 innings. David Stringer (2.0 IP, 2 SO) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Cardinal in the sixth and seventh.
