For the second straight day the Stanford synchronized swimming team swept all three events at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Ind. On the second day of competition the Cardinal swam their preliminary technical programs, with the top eight finishers in each event advancing to tomorrow's finals.
In the solo event, it was Sara Lowe taking the top spot once again as she posted a score of 47.584. Her two-day total of 95.584 makes her the top swimmer heading into the finals. Gayle Lee finished in 13th place, posting a score of 42.584 and bringing her total to 85.751. Santa Clara Aquamaids' Kenyon Smith will be advancing to the finals with a total score of 93.917, after placing second in the preliminary technical swim with a 47.00. Mary Killman of Santa Clara Aquamaids took third place in today's event with her score of 45.500, while Ohio State's Barbara Nesbitt will advance as the third place finisher with her total score of 91.418.
The duet program saw more of the same as Sara Lowe and Courtenay Stewart wrapped up another first place finish with their score of 47.667, also advancing as the team to beat in the finals with a total score of 95.584. Santa Clara Aquamaids took second and third as the two teams finished today's event with scores of 46.584 (93.501 total), and 44.084 (89.418 total).
The team of Elizabeth Anne Markman, Samantha Bongiovanni-Duclos, Sara Lowe, Courtenay Stewart, Poppy Carlig, Debbie Chen, and Hilary Homenko ended the day on another high note as they completed the sweep for the second straight day, this time winning the preliminary technical program. As the team has done all year long, they amazed the judges with their powerful lifts and fast routines to earn the top spot with a score of 47.584. Stanford's total score of 96.084 puts them in great position as they compete in tomorrow's finals as the team to beat. Ohio State took second in today's event, recording a 46.917 (94.751 total), while Santa Clara Aquamaids rounded out the top three as they earned a score of 46.334 (92.918 total).
Action concludes tomorrow as the top eight finishers in all three events will be competing in the finals with hopes of taking home the gold. Competition will begin at 10:15 a.m. with the solo final free competition. The scores from today's technical programs make up half of the teams final score, with the free swim finals tomorrow making up the final portion of the overall score.
