Top-ranked Stanford went back on the road after three games at home and defeated No. 6 UC Irvine 10-3 in an MPSF match in Irvine; CA. Stanford improved to 18-1 on the season and 7-0 in MPSF conference play. Lauren Silver scored four times which gave her 100 goals in her young Stanford career. The Cardinal raced out to an 8-1 lead at halftime, but was slowed in the second half in the 10-3 win. Jacquelyn Gauthier also chipped in two goals and Alison Gregorka rejoined her Stanford teammates and scored a goal in the win.
In the first quarter the Anteaters jumped on the board first when Gianni Rossi scored a minute into the game. This gave Stanford its first deficit since they came back to beat USC at the Avery Aquatics Center on February 3rd. Facing the early setback, Stanford responded by scoring the next four goals when Lauren Silver scored a six on five goal a little more than two minutes into the game. Less than a minute after Silver's goal, Katie Hansen found the net and 30 seconds after Hansen scored, Lauren Silver had another goal of her own and Stanford owned a 3-1 lead. With 36 seconds left in the quarter, Jacquelyn Gauthier scored a fourth goal for Stanford in the period, and after one quarter Stanford held a 4-1 lead.
The second quarter provided more strong play from the Cardinal as they continued with four more unanswered goals. Jessica Steffens scored a little more than a minute into the period and Lauren Silver scored her third goal of the game on a penalty shot and Stanford led 6-1. Soon after Silver's goal, Kelsey Holshouser got into the scoring action with a goal of her own, and with just 11 seconds before the half, Silver scored her fourth goal of the match and Stanford led 8-1 at the break.
The second half was a defensive battle and very evenly matched. Jacquelyn Gauthier scored her second goal of the match early in the third quarter, but Irvine's Jessica Lewis responded with a goal only five seconds later. Goals were tough to come by after Lewis' goal as only Alison Gregorka scored for the rest of the period on either side. After three quarters, Stanford held a commanding 10-2 lead.
The Cardinal was shut out in the fourth quarter as Irvine tightened up the defense and kept the number three offense at bay. Jackie Prine scored a goal at the end of the quarter for the Anteaters, and the match ended with a 10-3 victory for Stanford.
Meridith McColl had another fine game for Stanford recording 10 saves on the day, including two saves in the six on five situations. UC Irvine goalkeeper Lauren Machanis recorded six saves in the loss for UC Irvine. The loss dropped UC Irvine to 15-7 on the season and 3-5 in MPSF play.
Stanford returns to the pool when they visit the Long Beach State 49ers on the Long Beach State campus tomorrow April 7th at 12:00 PM.
